The adventures of gardening

And when you thought spring was here… March 31, 2010

…the chilling rains come.

It was so warm, in the 70s and 80s the past few weeks, but now we have been plunged into rain and clouds. California probably needs the rain, but still, I want warmth! It was warm enough to leave my tomato, cucumber, and pepper seeds outside all day, but now I will probably need to move them back in. Sigh. At least I was able to add some compost to the bed near my rosemary bush. Angel dug it up, though. She can’t stay away from fresh dirt. And I thought that hounds weren’t the digging type.

On a happier note, my 2 tomatoes that survived a week of brutal heat have shown their true leaves and my cucumbers are showing some green, but are a bit slow to poke up and open their leaves. My lettuce, swiss chard, and some carrots have come up. The carrots don’t takes as long as most people say, probably because of the warm weather that we’ve been having.

Just some thoughts… March 29, 2010

I was reading the National Geographic today. It was a special issue (I think) about the water crises. A shiny ad caught my eye about how farmers could save water. The paragraph was very optimistic, and I was in perfect agreement until I was stopped in my tracks. How? The end of the sentence went something like this – “by distributing water-saving irrigation tools and biotech seeds, we can help reduce the water crises.”  Biotech seeds??!! I couldn’t believe my eyes, and went back to read it again. There it was – biotech seeds. I then looked at the company logo, and what do you know? Its Monsanto again.

Another ad had something about plants bred for drought tolerance, but something about it (I’ll look over it again tomorrow) suggested GMOs. Again. By a water conservation group. Grrrrrr.  I’m not going to stop reading it, though (its free in my school library), but I’m going to look over the articles with a closer eye. Just out of curiosity, but has anyone else seen reputable magazines that host Monsanto ads?

Hello! March 26, 2010

This will be a journal chronicling my adventures in organic, sustainable gardening, with a few hobbies thrown in too! I am a young woman living in California, zone 9. I have a voracious American Foxhound named Angel for whom a part of this blog is named. She is a sweet girl and has been with us for 6 years and is 7 years old. She hates squirrels as much as I do, but loves to dig ….. oh well. My garden consists of small raised beds scattered around my house in suburbia. Not much space, but it doesn’t stop me from dreaming and hoarding plants. I hope to get some chickens by April, we’ll see how that works out…
